The first official flag of the Confederate States of America, called the ''Stars and Bars'', had seven stars in a circle pattern in the top left hand corner, representing the seven states that initially formed the Confederacy and a Red, White, Red vertical tri-band background. Proving difficult to distinguish the ''Stars and Bars'' from the Union Forces flag ''Stars and Stripes'' under chaotic battle conditions, the flag was changed to the ''Stainless Banner''.
